2015 Belmont Stakes Prediction
The 147th running of the Belmont Stakes should be a riveting one as American Pharoah attempts to a 37-year Triple Crown drought. The latest Freebetsodds horse race betting expect the colt to make history, favoring it at 2 to 3 odds to win ($150 wins $100) Saturday’s 1 1/2-miles race.
I, however, am not calling for American Pharoah to make history this weekend, in spite of my desire to see it happen. My 2015 Belmont Stakes prediction is calling for a Tale of Verve victory.
It took Tale of Verve, a 20 to 1 pick to win the Belmont Stakes, six chances to break his maiden, but the late bloomer certainly represents a threat to the rest of Saturday’s field. The colt ran well enough to finish second to American Pharoah in the slop at Pimilco last month and could be coming into his own just in time for the Belmont.
And aboard the Tale of Ekati colt is veteran jockey and three-time Belmont Stakes winner Gary Stevens. Stevens tamed the “Test of the Champion” in 1995 aboard Thunder Gulch and he did so again in 1998 and 2001, piloting Victory Gallop and Point Given, respectively, to Belmont wins.
Bob Baffert, American Pharoah’s trainer, no doubt, still feels the sting of Victory Gallop’s Belmont triumph as it spoiled Real Quiet’s Triple Crown bid.
Tale of Verve’s owner, Chris Fipke, is hoping to do the same to Baffert this weekend and he likes his colts chances of upsetting the apple cart.
“(Tale of Verve) is bred for 12 furlongs,” Said Fipke. “He’s a beautiful horse; confirmation-wise he’s to die for. American Pharoah is pretty nice, but we were in the same shedrow at Churchill Downs and ours is nicer. He has the stamina, so we think we might have an advantage there. We have the distance aptitude based on pedigrees.”
“His ancestors handled Belmont well … so he should run on,” Fipke continued. “He’s shown he can really come from behind.”
Pace will be key for Tale of Verve tomorrow, but Stevens is a master planner and the colt is in fine hands from that perspective.
The colt will start the 2015 Belmont Stakes from Post 2, which has yielded 11 race winners. American Pharoah, meanwhile, drew Post 5 for Saturday’s Triple Crown finale.
Baffert seemed pleased with the development, but was more concerned with his horse’s health.
“I don’t really think it’s a horrible post position,” Baffert said. “I’ve always liked the 5. It’s one I’ve had good luck with. The main thing is that the horse is doing well. I think that’s the most important thing. He’s doing great, but we still have to get around there.”
Based on the latest odds, Baffert is not alone in that sentiment.
The rest of the post draw is listed below along with accompanying odds for the Belmont. Post time in tomorrow’s race is set for 6:50 p.m. ET; coverage of the much anticipated event will be provided by NBC and NBC Sports.
