2015 Preakness Stakes Post Draw & Betting Odds

The 2015 Preakness Stakes post draw is complete and trainer Bob Baffert saw his two colts, American Pharoah and Dortmund, draw gates one and two, respectively, for Saturday’s race. In spite of the unfortunate draw, at least in Baffert’s eyes, the pair are the favorites to win the Preakness Stakes. American Pharoah is still the top pick among bettors and odds makers at 5 to 6 betting odds while Dortmund is drawing a 15 to 4 line as a second choice.

Firing Line had overtaken Dortmund in most Preakness odds prior to this evening’s post draw, but the colt is now getting a 17 to 4 price ($100 wins $425) as offshore bookmaker Bovada.lv’s third pick to conquer the rest of the “Run for the Black-Eyed Susans” field.

Firing Line drew the far outside gate, but with the Preakness featuring just eight runners, the distance is not an issue. In fact, it may be to the colt’s advantage.

Firing Line’s trainer, Simon Callaghan, concurred with that sentiment.

“We’re happy with that,” Callaghan said. “We’ve got options from out there. It’s perfect. We’re happy.”

Baffert, on the other hand, was not happy.

“I can’t believe I drew the 1-2 of all draws. I’m just glad I didn’t draw that for the Derby,” Baffert said. “Sometimes you’ve got to give a little. It’s a short field, eight horses. He still has to break well. If he’s the best horse, we’ll find out.”

Obviously, the majority of horse racing fans and bookmakers still believe American Pharoah is the best horse, regardless of his starting position.

The 140th running of the Preakness Stakes is set for Saturday, May 16 at the Pimilco Racetrack in Baltimore. NBC and NBC Sports will cover the event.
