Mike Tyson did not back Anthony Joshua to produce his stunning win over Wladimir Klitschko at Wembley but says in being proved wrong the British star has ‘changed boxing’.

The man who ruled the heavyweights in the late 1980s and early 1990s has seen the his former division fall into relative obscurity until recent years, with the lighter boxers earning the big money.

With the emergence of a number of new challengers, headed up by Joshua, the top division is becoming the main draw again.

Tyson did not actually see AJ’s win coming, backing the veteran Klitschko to kill off the rising British star, but says the result has shifted the boxing landscape.

‘It was a great fight,’ Tyson told ESPN. ‘I had actually picked Klitschko to win as I thought this was just some jumped-up young guy from England. But man he fought well. Klitschko is 41 and no-one has ever done that to him.

‘Importantly, he showed heart. He took a big punch from Klitschko and went down but he got back up. He showed real intestinal fortitude.’

He added: ‘Whenever there’s a new heavyweight champion and he’s explosive like that and wins the title like that it changes the whole game

‘All the little guys that were making a lot of money are not going to make their money any more.

‘It’s all going to be about Joshua and the heavyweights now. That one fight changed boxing.’
