Kentucky Derby 2015 Odds
Excitement is building for Saturday’s 141st Run for the Roses as everyone anticipates a potential showdown between stable mates American Pharoah and Dortmund. The two colts, both trained by three-time Derby winner Bob Baffert, are the favorites to win the race according to the latest Kentucky Derby 2015 Odds, coming in at 9 to 4 and 9 to 2 prices, respectively. Todd Pletcher’s Carpe Diem and Materiality are third and fourth choices to win the first leg of the Triple Crown series. Carpe Diem is drawing a 7 to 1 line while Materiality, along with Mubtaahij, is a 12 to 1 Derby pick.
If the odds hold true to form, Bob Baffert will be a happy man on Saturday evening, but he will also be dealing with at least one disappointed client.
Ahmed Zayat, the owner of American Pharoah, and Kaleem Shah, Dortmund’s owner, both have reason to expect a win this weekend, but the reality of the Derby is this: they could both walk away empty handed.
If Dortmund fails to hit the pole first this weekend, it be his first setback in six career starts. The son of Big Brown has faced his share of quality competition, beating fellow Derby runners Firing Line, Mr Z and Bolo, and he has won at distances of 6.5 furlongs, 1-mile, 1 1/16-miles and 1 1/8-miles.
American Pharoah took fifth in his first career start, but he since gone on to win the Del Mar Futurity, FrontRunner Stakes, Rebel Stakes and Arkansas Derby with ease. But results are not the only reason the colt is so highly regarded.
American Pharoah, according to most observers, seems to run with little effort, covering great swaths of ground with ease, and he does so while sporting impeccable form.
“He stays in the longer than any horse, and you get the feeling that there’s not one gear left, but he may have two, three or four years,” private clocker Gary Young said in regard to American Pharoah.
Still, neither American Pharoah nor Dortmund has faced such a stacked field and anything can and usually does happen at the Kentucky Derby. So the door will certainly be open for horses like Carpe Diem and Materiality, who have seven wins in eight starts between them.
